Commit to the Preparation

October 24, 2023

Some pathways require considerable stamina and deliberate preparation. Running on this track in the desert must be really intense. Imagine the heat! Here is a man who has set a goal and who has taken the time to do the work. He has created a vision of what he wants to achieve and he has taken the time and energy to define what skills, performance objectives, mental and physical stamina he needs. He may also have extended his preparation into the spiritual (unseen) realm as well. Perhaps he is preparing for a marathon to honor his grandfather, or to bring recognition to his family and community. Or perhaps he is making this part of his commitment to reclaim his own life and demonstrate to himself that he has the capability to do anything he wants to do!

IS YOUR CUP TOO FULL?

Think about Great Learning that you might need to help in going down a pathway that is challenging and will take considerable commitment on your part. Remember Mr. Miagi in the Karate Kid, pouring tea into the Kid’s cup. As it overflows, he said that the young boy’s mind was like the cup—too full of himself to let in more useful knowledge! List your ideas for each of the suggested areas. Some topics will have a lot of ideas and actions; others maybe only a few. You can also brainstorm your mind map with a friend.

MANY QUESTIONS START THE PLAN

You could ask questions like:

  • What are the outcomes I expect from completing this big project?
  • What are the milestones that will let me know I am making progress?
  • A what point can I begin to see progress?
  • What type of things do I need to say to myself for encouragement. What thoughts do I need to avoid?
  • What do I need to learn? (consider the emotional, mental, physical, and spiritual skills you might need).
  • Who could be a mentor to me? (Mentors can be anyone, not just people in your circle. Observing behavior and wisdom can occur in any situation.)
  • What organizations could provide me with information, tools, and people who could give me a heads up about the topic (mentors, resources).
  • What skills do I need to learn? Any skill has broad general skills that you can see, but to master that skill, you need to know the little skills that make up the big skills.

Mind mapping is a planning resource that you can use for planning for your great accomplishment, or for writing a paper, or planning a camping trip. After you create the mind map, you can transfer the tasks into an Excel sheet to give you an outline of a schedule of tasks that you can use to create your milestones and performance objectives. This map shows only the major topic areas. You can extend each branch by including ideas that define and illustrate each of the branch topics.

Having a variety of insurance programs is part of every successful person's risk management package. Health, life, auto, home replacement, and renter's and disability insurance are common forms of insurance that provide a sense of security about the future.

When I was ten, my cousins and I would often play in the Old Motor Parkway. To us, it was a wonderful long grassy space surrounded by little trees and overgrown shrubbery.

One of the teachings of the Native American Elders is that “everything is interconnected.” Most of us think of the connections we have made with family, with friends and neighbors.
